Clearing Negative Thoughts and Finding Joyful Spaces

It is easy to talk about what we have been through once we have overcome our challenges and established a worthwhile story to share with the world. But how do we function during hard times, while we are still feeling like nothing is going right and when we are hurt and in pain. 

 

My simplest answer is to create a space of hope and focus on the future. The goal is to clear those negative thoughts that plague our minds and place ourselves in spaces where we find joy and peace. 

 

Sometimes it’s hard to envision our future self as a success story during the battle. Let’s face it, sometimes our mind’s only defense mechanism is to crawl in a corner and disappear. But that is never the best option, it solves nothing in the long run. There are so many places where we can find joy and walk into  the future with confidence. 

 

Based on my experiences I would recommend the following strategies that have helped me.

 

  1. Journaling: Write your feelings in a journal, record what you want to change, make notes of the steps and actions you will take to get where you want to be.

  2. Listening to uplifting music.

  3. Reading a motivational book.

  4. Praying and meditation.

  5. Watching a movie with a positive message.

  6. Trying a new recipe.

  7. Going for a walk.

  8. Calling someone who loves you.

  9. Volunteering at your school or community.

  10. Working out or playing sports.

 

What works for some people may not work for others but I encourage you to try as many uplifting methods as possible and stick it out. Give yourself a chance to fully explore the best methods that work for you.

 

Put reminders in places you go frequently. For example using colorful sticky notes to write quick messages of hope in your room, in the bathroom, on the refrigerator. These could be verses you have read or heard in a song or a line from a movie. Let these notes serve as positive reminder that you are strong and will overcome!

 

You can even create a Vision Board manifesting your future. Create a visual representation of your short term and long term goals. These pictures are meant to remind you that each day must be intentionally navigating because there is a desired destination.

 

Find accountability partners of trust, reliable and loving people. These people are not always a friend or a family but mentors who want to see you succeed in your life endeavors. They may have been in similar situations as you are going through and can help you journey carefully through your challenges.
